“I can think of few arts complexes that induce such a rush of excitement on arrival” The Daily Telegraph

Royal & Derngate is the main venue for arts and entertainment in Northampton and reopened in October 2006 after a £15 million redevelopment project.

The venue offers a diverse programme of work with everything from drama to dance, stand-up comedy to classical music, children’s shows to opera on its stages. Some of the biggest names and shows on tour can be found here, alongside a programme of widely acclaimed in-house produced work. The theatre also offers a programme of Creative Projects that gives people the chance to get involved in performing, writing or to find out more about what goes on behind the scenes.

    • 15/04/2009 - 18/04/2009 Billy Twinkle

Internationally acclaimed and critically celebrated Ronnie Burkett is Canada’s best-known marionette artist, creating some of the most elaborate and provocative puppetry you’ll ever see. His spectacular new show Billy Twinkle visits Royal & Derngate, one of only four venues in its exclusive UK tour.

Billy Twinkle is a middle-aged cruise ship puppeteer who dazzles audiences with his Stars in Miniature marionette niteclub act. His saucy burlesque stripper Rusty titillates the tourists, and roller-skating Bumblebear steals their hearts. Billy is the best in the business and on top of the world. Until he is fired by the cruiseline…

Established in 1986, Ronnie Burkett has received numerous awards as a playwright, actor and designer for his work with Theatre of Marionettes and has stimulated an unprecedented adult audience for puppet theatre.

Not suitable for children under the age of 14.

    • 01/05/2009 - 16/05/2009 Under Milk Wood

Dylan Thomas’s rich and poetic masterpiece paints a unique picture of the sleeping desires of the eccentric community of Llareggub in their wonderfully vivid dream world. Here the play is reimagined with a darker edge, presenting an intensely dramatic but touchingly comic portrayal of love and madness.
