Macbeth is dead. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the landscape, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power.

David Greig's exhilarating new play commissioned by the RSC is a vision of one man's attempt to restore peace in a country ravaged by war. Dunsinane focuses on an often misrepresented period in Scotland's history, the events surrounding the death of Macbeth and the subsequent conflict for control of the Scottish throne.

A long way from the story as told by Shakespeare, David's epic play follows the efforts of the English general, Siward, to secure a stable succession for the Scottish throne, while protecting England's interest. But the play goes far beyond a re-telling of historical fact. Very relevant to our current political climate, it is a darkly comic and compelling story of one man's attempt to do the right thing in difficult and dangerous circumstances.

David is a multi award-winning Scottish playwright whose play with music, Midsummer, was a hit of last year’s Edinburgh Festival and transferred to Soho Theatre with critical acclaim. RSC Associate Director Roxana Silbert directs her first production for the Company with a cast including Siobhan Redmond and Jonny Phillips.
