How it Ended You Need Me

HOW IT ENDED, the debut piece from physical theatre company You Need Me, is a tender and tragic exploration of marriage in an era of uncompromising expectations. Staged in the round with live music, a company of international actors play with traditional storytelling techniques to explore a true story of cultural alienation and loneliness. The focus shifts from Wales during the Second World War to France in the immediate aftermath of liberation, keeping at its centre the fierce fading of a wartime romance.

A hauntingly initmate story of love in decline.

When teenager Coral awakes, she finds herself unexpectedly on a small island, which she quickly names Coral’s Island. She has no idea how she got there and even less idea of how to get back. She is equally surprised when two strangers join her; one climbs out of the earth beside her, the other is washed in by the tide. Thrown together in a battle for survival and meaning, to discover how to get home they must first discover why they are there.

CORAL is a beautiful and haunting contemporary parable about the delicate balance of man and nature with moments of visual beauty and original music. It is the tale of one girl’s discovery that no matter how much we think we are alone, we are always connected, not just to other people, but to the earth itself..

Buy Little, Buy Less Claire Dowie

We are delighted to welcome Claire Dowie back to The Nuffiled after her last production From H to He. Claire’s work combines the hypnotic intensity of an inspired story teller and the audience rapport of a stand up comic - so we strongly recommend her new production BUY LITTLE, BUY LESS.

In a shop, suddenly, without warning, a young woman chewing gum, humming and chatting to her mates, goes pale, stops chewing, stops humming, stops chatting, looks at the frou-frou top she’s been pondering, looks hard at it... then puts it back on the rail, replaces all the stuff she’s been collecting to try on. Her mates watch concerned. The young woman looks genuinely confused and not a little bit frightened: “I’ve got tops! I don’t need tops! I’ve got tops I’ve never worn.”

Claire Dowie’s new piece examines our obsession “to buy or not to buy” in a comical Kafkaesque world which is both familiar and unexpected.

Playgoers I bid you welcome. The theatre is a temple and we are here to worship the gods of Comedy & Tragedy. Tonight, I am pleased to announce a Comedy.

Broadway’s greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written – the perfect escape from life’s troubles. A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville.

Forum tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. Southampton Operatic Society’s production is indeed something for everyone: A Comedy Tonight.

When Jack’s mischievous friend, Algernon, decides to visit Jack’s home posing as Ernest, confusion follows. Mistaken identities can only be resolved through discovering the origins of a large black handbag! Wilde described this play as: ‘exquisitely trivial, a delicate bubble of fancy, and it has its philosophy.... that we should treat all the trivial things of life seriously and all the serious things of life with sincere and studied triviality.’

An Amateur Performance by The Maskers Theatre Company The Crucible By Arthur Miller Directed by Harry Tuffill

Arthur Miller’s classic parable of mass hysteria draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witch-hunt of 1692 - ‘one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history’ - and the McCarthyism which gripped America in the 1950s.

The story of how the small community of Salem is stirred into madness by superstition, paranoia and malice, culminating in a violent climax. The events that led to the Witch Trials began with the seemingly inexplicable behaviour of two young girls and culminated in accusation, violence and death.

By the time the hysteria had spent itself, 24 people had died - nineteen were hanged on Gallows Hill in Salem Town, or died in prison. A powerful drama not to be missed.
