Rose Theatre Kingston ‹ Back to results
The Rose Theatre first opened its doors in January 2008. Although a new theatre, the auditorium is based on the ground plan of the original Elizabethan Rose Theatre from London’s Bankside. There is a long, wide and open stage with horse-shoe shaped seating and a pit area immediately in front of the stage, where people can sit on cushions to watch the action at very close proximity. This design makes every performance feel intimate – as the actors are able to see each and every member of the audience.
The Rose Theatre plays host to a wide variety of productions and one-night events. This spring, the Rose welcomes the internationally acclaimed all-male company Propeller, with A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Merchant of Venice, Out of Joint, The Convict’s Opera, Northern Broadsides’ Othello, with Lenny Henry and The Winslow Boy with Timothy West. In addition to this, The Vagina Monologues, Defending the Caveman, Stones in His Pockets, The Comedy Store (monthly residency) and dance from Sakoba.
The Rose also presents a series of talks with theatre professionals – called Time to Talk. Past talks have featured Penelope Wilton, Richard Briers and Peter Hall. This year will see Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy, Skins), Lenny Henry and Max Stafford-Clark (Out of Joint Artistic Director) in the spotlight. There are also free events in the café – from Rhyme Time for babies and toddlers, to free jazz and a Philosophy Café.
Stephen Unwin, the founder of English Touring Theatre, is the Artistic Director of the Rose Theatre and works alongside Director Emeritus, Sir Peter Hall.
